Chimneys play an important role in our homes, providing us with a way to heat our homes and cook our food. But what exactly are they, and how do they work?


A chimney is a structure that houses a flue, which is a duct that carries combustion gases and smoke up and out of a building. The word “chimney” comes from the Latin word for “throat.”


A chimney typically consists of a firebox, where the fire is built; a smoke chamber, which helps to direct the flow of smoke up the flue; and a flue, which carries the smoke and gases up and out of the chimney.
